Gillian Reynolds writes:
St. Matthew's was full of friends and family, colleagues and congregation on Sunday 31st October at Matins to commemorate the life of the Revd Gareth Evans, Vicar of St Matthew's Church from 1982 to 2009. The music was distinctively Welsh. The Great Western Railway Paddington Band, of which Gareth was a member for many years, played throughout, conducted by Peter Legge. Our choir's numbers swelled to a magnificent dozen. The Archdeacon of Charing Cross, the Ven. William Jacob, officiated.

We sang great hymns, including Guide me, O thou great Redeemer to Gary Eyre's superb organ accompaniment. Brian Frost read his own poem In Celebration: for Gareth. We heard memories of Gareth as schoolboy and student from Stuart John; of Gareth, our compassionate vicar, from Rosemary Combridge; of Gareth, knowledgeable Bayswater neighbour, from David Lloyd. It was a service perfectly reflecting Gareth's spirit and many gifts, for music and poetry, arts and crafts, languages, friendship, fellowship. We are deeply grateful to Gareth's widow, Cecilia Evans, and to Gary Eyre for arranging it all so generously, so beautifully.
