21 Dec 11 Successful Lessons and Carols Service
More than 100 people thronged the candlelit church on Sunday 18th December for this year’s Festival of Lessons & Carols. During the service the Choir processed around the church, symbolising the journeys of Mary and Joseph, the Shepherds, and the Wise Men whose visit we will celebrate at an Epiphany service on Sunday 8th January.
The Acting Director of Music, Max Pappenheim, compiled a truly inspirational programme of carols both for the choir and congregation with superb accompaniment by Organist Douglas McIlwraith.
The seven Lessons were read by members of the congregation and choir, with the seventh, ‘St John Unfolds the Great Mystery of the Incarnation’ from St John 1, being read by the Revd Jennie Hogan who led the service.
After the final Choir Carol, "’Go Preach the Gospel now" he said’ a traditional English Carol arranged by Ralph Vaughan Williams, Douglas McIlwraith played a superb Organ Voluntary: Piece d’Orgue B W V 572 by J S Bach.
