When the Christmas Grotto goes up at a Garden Centre we visit, we know that Christmas is on the way. It (that is the Grotto) is full of all manner of ‘stuff’ – endless decorations, furry toys to buy (including a life-sized Tiger!), a model train set (which enthralls my 2 year old), there is even a Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe section. It is all rather amazing.
We will all have a great deal to be getting on with in these next 6 weeks. My plea (and I make it to myself as much as to others) is that in all the hurly burly, we keep centred the One we are celebrating; Jesus Christ. If God is good (and he is) and if God knows what’s best for us (and he does) then in Jesus we see the goodness and perfection of God arrive on planet earth. I know, he doesn’t, at face value, appear to size up to our expectations, but let me assure you that he is God in human form and the more we are able to stop, look, listen and learn from him the more ‘life’ we shall truly find.
Put another way, Jesus is the great present this Christmas. Many today seem confused or unconvinced. The invitation is, come to find out more. We’re dying to meet you, and so too is God himself.
